The causal/experiential field of this question/answer appears endlessly complicated and subtle. We inherit so much, we are so much of what has happened before, before we were born, during the gestation of our bodies, and every moment after. We affect others and are affected by them in ways we will never know. Perception exists as tremendous bundles of impulses, thoughts, and drives blind to each other. But the body’s complexity is simple in its integrity. It responds. If I had a choice I would be right and liked. I would get my way. But the body is not concerned with objective morality, much less with my superficial narcissisms. Terrifying. But why, then, is it so kind?
